When a family places a loved one in a nursing home, they trust the facility to provide safety, care, and dignity. Residents have legal rights, and facilities have clear duties. When abuse or neglect breaks that trust, the law gives families a way to demand answers and accountability.

You Trusted Them With Your Loved One. They Owed You Care.

Placing a parent or grandparent in a care facility is a hard decision, made on the promise that they will be safe, clean, fed, and treated with dignity. When that promise is broken, the betrayal cuts deep.

Abuse and neglect take many forms: untreated bedsores, malnutrition and dehydration, unexplained injuries, falls from inadequate supervision, medication errors, and physical or emotional mistreatment. Signs are often subtle, and facilities are not always forthcoming.

We investigate what happened, gather the records and evidence, work with the appropriate authorities, and hold the facility accountable for the harm it caused to someone who deserved far better. Suspected abuse can also be reported to Adult Protective Services.

Attorney Insight

“Nursing home cases are personal in a way few others are, because the victim is often someone who cannot fully advocate for themselves, and the family is wracked with guilt for not seeing it sooner. They should not be. Facilities are responsible for the care they promised, and the warning signs, the bedsore that should never have formed, the weight loss, the unexplained bruise, point to neglect that the facility knew about and let continue. I investigate thoroughly, work with the proper authorities, and make the facility answer for failing someone who deserved dignity.”

Common Questions

Answers Before You Call

What are common signs of nursing home neglect?
Bedsores, malnutrition or dehydration, poor hygiene, unexplained injuries, falls, sudden mood or weight changes, and medication errors. Subtle changes can be early warnings worth investigating.
What rights does a nursing home resident have?
Virginia law guarantees residents the right to safety, proper care, and dignity. Facilities have clear duties, and a failure to meet them can support a claim.
Can I report suspected abuse right now?
Yes. Suspected abuse or neglect of a vulnerable adult can be reported to Adult Protective Services. We can also help you understand the steps and coordinate with authorities.
The facility is not giving us answers. What can we do?
That is common, and it is one reason to involve us early. We gather the records, the care logs, and the evidence the facility may be reluctant to share.
How long do I have to file?
Generally two years in Virginia, with exceptions. Acting promptly helps preserve records and the resident’s condition as evidence.
What does it cost?
The consultation is free and these cases are handled on contingency, so there is no fee unless we recover.
